Trees in the Desert?

Phoenix AZ maybe be a desert, but the value of trees is present with the tree and shade master plan put in place 2010. Trees are vital role in any community. They provide shade (needed in the hot summer day of Phoenix), provide livable communities, add to the ecosystem, and create an oasis.

Trees also provide:

  • Increased home values
  • Production of Oxygen
  • Reduction of CO2
  • Shade areas of the yard and neighborhood
  • Cool sidewalks and direct sunlight locations in the yard
  • Cut home cooling costs if planted on direct sunlight areas
  • Produce food for humans and wildlife
  • Cut down winds
  • Peaceful and serene settings
  • Minimize frost and dew
  • Flowers that provide fragrance to the yard
  • Provide privacy
  • Sound buffers
  • Reduce urban heating
  • Habitat for wildlife

Phoenix has many native trees that tolerate the extremes of the Sonoran Dessert. The trees can tolerate the long hot summers, monsoon storms, and colder winter nights. Some of the trees are:

  • Western Soapberry
    • Growth 10-50 Ft.
    • Uses buttons, soaps, and necklaces. The fruit is not eatable
  • Arizona Sycamore
    • Growth 80 Ft.
    • Great for patio areas and blooms in spring
  • Box Elder/Ash Leaf
    • Growth 60 ft.
    • Blooms March and April yellow, green, and brown
  • Arizona Ash
    • Growth 30-50 ft.
    • Great for Summer Shade
  • Black Cherry
    • Growth 25-110 Ft.
    • Used for furniture, cherry flavoring, jams, and wine
    • Desert Willow
    • Growth 6-30 Ft.
    • Flowering tree with pink clusters

These trees will tolerate and grow well in your yard, park, and community. They do take some special care to plant and nurture, but the benefits of planting trees outweighs the start-up cost and time of planting non-native trees.

It is important to plant trees that are native to your community to prevent diseases and expensive watering and care. Please see your local nursery for plants and contact AMC Consolidated for tree trimming needs.
